My friend Marc posted a story on Facebook today that shocked me, both as a Mom and as a gamer. I remember when I was in my early teens. There was a big hulabaloo about Dungeons & Dragons making kids worship satan and do all sorts of evil things. Back then it wasn’t a video game. Neverwinter Nights wasn’t around yet. It was a table top RPG played with multisided dice in bright colors and various numbers of sides. More recently there have been horrible stories about video games.

World of Warcraft is one of the top offenders when you hear about video game addiction, confusing fantasy with real life, child abuse or neglect, and the list goes on.

It’s reminiscent of other things deemed to make kids worship satan or attract businesses of ill repute. Rock N’ Roll had the same problem. In 1990 Judas Priest was taken to court and sued over two fans’ suicides. It’s always the same blame game. With the players not taking responsibility for their own decisions and actions.

There’s a town in Massachusetts that has outlawed coin operated video games since 1983. Much like the (awesome) movie Footloose, they believe coin operated video games would cause harm to children, cause them to squander their money, attract adult entertainment and prostitution.

Opponents warned the machines would attract undesirables and cause children to steal and squander their money. Selectmen chairwoman Faith Jean told residents allowing video games would bring other “smut” to town.

Seriously? And when a motion to repeal it recently came up? it didn’t pass. I can’t believe what I was reading. I really can’t.  Children will always squander their money. Whether it’s on candy, comic books, toys, or video games. And one man’s Squander is another’s good investment.  I also don’t happen to believe anything worse can be seen in video games than can be seen in TV shows or movies.  Pac Man eats dots and Donkey Kong throws barrels at Mario. Sonic picks up rings and does acrobatic loop dee loos. This is worse than TV? This is worse than movies? THIS will bring unsavory things to the town? What’s next book bans? No Dancing?

Kids will squander money, yes. And it’s the parents jobs to teach them otherwise. It’s OUR duty to teach them right from wrong. It’s OUR responsibility to instill in them values that will get them through their lives. But they have free will. And they will push the boundaries and they will rebel. And they will ALWAYS find something to spend their money on. The fastest way to lead a child to temptation is to forbid the source.

I just wish people would see the GOOD in video games. All it takes is a look at the fans they create. The imaginations of the players is nothing short of amazing. I have read amazing works of fan fiction from Dragon Age fans. I have seen amazing drawings from a range of video game fans in general. Playing video games has given me a broader source of imagination, made me want to write, to learn to draw.  And more than this, they inspire students to want to CREATE games. To work as a designer.  Of course the games aren’t outlawed at home. Just coin operated games in public places. But it’s got to start somewhere right?

I had a nice Mother’s Day.  Even with Hubby gone, and one kid grounded for life, the other at a friend’s house all day after church. Shocking right?

My youngest daughter, while I was searching around post for something, took it upon herself to make me a card and vaccuum the living room, dining room, and hall. She the proceeded to make dinner later that evening.

My oldest who was home for all of 15 minutes, brought  with her a vase of yellow tulips and the above plate of cookies.

My husband, who isn’t HERE at least called. And if you knew him you’d know that for him to suffer through talking on the phone requires an act of God. Or a holiday. He also, though I did the actual ordering, and just told him about it, got me my World of Warcraft plushies.

mothersday

As for how I spent my day? I treated myself to something I haven’t done in AGES. I played WoW allllll day. I even stayed up late, laughing and running dungeons with my guildies. I didn’t get to bed until almost 2am. I completely forgot the dogs hadn’t been out since arounmd 6pm. So for Mother’s Day even the dogs gave me a gift by not complaining and not peeing on the floor.

And a shout out to Shianti, my favoritest healer! Because my hunter and her pet pulled some really dumb shit last night and she kept us alive!! And my Apologies to twice, whom I may have led some hungry tigers to. What can I say? they crave dwarf sometimes?

Apparently, our pets don’t shrink anymore. Which makes me happy. But also the Frostsaber Stalkers got a new skin. Isn’t she gorgeous? I named her Isis.

Speaking of matching sets, this pair will never cease to amuse me…

Well you had to know I’d blog about this right? Sunday night, I was sitting here playing some games, doing some doodling and watching facebook. Hubby had just texted he was getting a shower and going to bed (he’s on the east coast right now). One of my friends in Alaska at our old post, mentioned the threat levels for all military installations was just increased. This happens sometimes, mostly without me even knowing because I don’t go off post when hubby isn’t here. But then I see on twitter that the President is scheduled to make a statement. This looks bad if you’re in MY shoes let me tell you. I text Hubby hoping he hasn’t fallen asleep yet. Nothing.

While waiting for the president they finally announce the death of Bin Laden is the reason for the statement. I start furiously texting the husband at this point.

Me: OMG BIN LADEN IS DEAD!!!
Me: DAMMIT WAKE UP!!!
Me: OMG you WOULD be the one to sleep through this!!
Him: Watching Now!

And I was happy. I admit it. I was happy that our military accomplished a mission 10 years in the making. I was HAPPY that justice was served for the families of 9/11, and the families of those who have died fighting the evil this man has put forth in the world. I was smiling as crowds took to the streets, singing patriotic songs and waving American flags. I was proud to see thousands of Penn State students singing our national anthem in the streets of campus, and by God if I were a local student rather than online I’d have joined in.

We Are Penn State

I haven’t seen such unity and pride since 9/11. But it was short lived. The very next day, heck not even 24 hours later came conspiracy theories, doubts, accusations, and the worst…judgment. Criticism because people were cheering the death of a human being. Criticism that in celebrating they were turning a blind eye to a bigger threat. Trust me, I know the bigger threat, my husband, my friends husbands have fought the bigger threat. My closest friend’s husband, who lost a leg in Iraq was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan when the news broke.  We KNOW.  And most of us are celebrating our military’s success! Not the actual death but the successful completion of a mission by our highly trained men in uniform. The same men and women that have been fighting the War on Terror on two fronts for TEN LONG YEARS.  We celebrated them in the streets of NYC with a ticker tape parade in WW2.  Why should we not celebrate them now?  Why should they not get a “Great Job guys!” from the people they sacrifice to protect and defend? Screw the politics, screw the judgments, screw the doubts and conspiracy theories and THANK GOD for our service members. They damned well DESERVE to see the celebration of their success.  We would have done this had he been captured alive too, but noone seems to realize that. Of course THEN all the criticism would have been that we didn’t kill him.
