Since the release of Wrath of the Lich King, the game is more active than it has been for months. There are announcements of server firsts, achievements to be had, leveling to do, new crafts to learn new areas to explore. And more things for people to snark about.

The one that’s really ticking me off is the “that guy has no life” comment every time someone gets to 80 in this first week, or is already 80 and has T7 gear pieces, or pvp gear, or whatever.

“OMG talk about no life!!” or any of the myriad of things already said by non gamers about anyone that plays WoW, but now being said by people that are playing the same game, spending just as much time at it. It’s really getting on my last nerve.

First of all, what’s with the “No life” comment? Maybe these people DO have a busy life, and took some time OFF to get as much done as they can with the xpac release, before returning to that job/school, and returning to limited playtime. In fact I know a few military guys that have done exactly that. Time off ranging from a 4 day pass (gives a 4 day weekend) to taking some leave time(vacation). My hubby did not, but he’s also fine with just getting there when he gets there. Maybe they do only have WoW to keep them sane, due to disability, there could be a variety of possibilities that  we’ll never know.

Second, I know for a fact I spend just as much time online as these players that have hit the level cap. Being a stay at home mom that’s my luxury. No, I’m not even close to 80, and probably won’t be for a while. And I’m not in any rush. Because end game isn’t my main goal. However, for some End Game is the best part of the game and they want to reach it as fast as possible. Kudos to them!! I have never found leveling easy, so I’m impressed when people get to top level as fast as some of them have, and frankly, I also don’t care how they did it. It’s their $15/month, they have the right to their playstyle. What’s the big deal?

I have 56 non combat pets, 375 skills (not counting fishing) spread across 3 70’s and a 68. I have 56 non combat pets on my main, and I spent most of the week camping book spawns for an achievement, and fishing so I can get more.  This could be evidence of “no life” too I guess.

Bottom line is, we ALL spend about the same time online doing what makes US happy, be it powering through to 80 and Naxx ASAP, collecting achievements, questing, grinding, instancing, exploring. We are all human beings behind these keyboards that really know nothing about each other. Why be so negative against those who have achieved their goals? Is it hurting you personally? Anymore than us playing our way is hurting them? No.

Gamers fight the “No life/living in mom’s basement/geek” stereotype every day, we shouldn’t have to fight it amongst ourselves.

I did a bad thing. Well, a couple really. First of all, after a night of Epic Fail, I logged in to WoW to try and pick myself up. The first thing I see is a new member cursing out the guild. Now, if you’ve read that link, you’d know I was already IN Mama Bear mode. I’m fiercely loyal to this guild, they took me in, they put up with me, they have treated me really well. So, Lady Jess went on a Jessyfit with the troll.

Do I know better? yes. Should I have restrained myself, yes. But I did not.  The issue was, he asked a question in gchat, during a 25 man raid, and didn’t get a reply. Well, that happens. We all do it, we all get busy and forget to look at guild chat. Be it in a 25 man raid, a battleground, questing, or just relaxing and farming or working on achievements. Sometimes we are even tabbed out chatting, or reading blogs, strategies, researching something. Or, AFK dealing with something at home.

So, what do you do if you get no response? Go off on a tangent with your oh so intelligent foul language accusing your new guild of utter disrespect and flail about like a two year old? Or do you assume everyone is busy/not looking, and wait until you see some gchat activity pick up and ask again? The second choice, to me seems obvious. It happens to me, mostly I just wait, or if I’m asking a specific person, I’ll jokingly threaten to give them a middle name and “full name” them in chat.

Don’t cause drama in your guild channel over a missed question people. It won’t matter how nice you are when not provoked. You are new, and for many this will be their first impression of you. You likely won’t get any sympathy from the veteran members, and only serve to prove the solidarity that exists between them.

Veterans…don’t feed the trolls. They only bite the hand that feeds them, and troll spit takes days to wash off.

sadcai So yesterday, we opt to do the daily heroic. It was Underbog. Cairessa needed 4 badges to get her Steadying Bracers Ignoring 105 armor…mmmm yum. We get a group, need one more dps. So one of our new members, brings his alternatively guilded toons. A druid. Sounds good. We get started, and have a couple unfortunate incidents in the first large area. Hey, It happens. After his second, maybe 3rd death, he suddenly tells us his deaths cost 4 gold each, and his guild needs him for raiding and he can’t do this.

/boggle

I know how expensive repairs can be, and I know how much it costs to get my consumables for each raid. This isn’t my first time in the pool buddy, this is my second toon I’m gearing up here, and the repair bills will be more on her too. I can promise you I have seen my doozies on Jessmyn. That PMC and FSW crafted cloth stuff is expensive. And holy crap, try being an epicced holy priest that gets TWO deaths for the price  of one! That is no excuse for dumping your guild members before we get anywhere. None. You know going into a run, there will be death. Death is a part of life. Suck it up man! Put your big boy panties on and get over it. You didn’t get all that gear by one shotting every 5 man, every heroic and every boss. Sorry charlie that’s not how it works. Maybe you should remember what it was like to be at the stage we are on the toons we ran with.

Remember learning your class? And remember trying to do it while still getting gear needed for your level of content? Our pally tank may be a little green yet, but he does a good job, and does his best every time. His main by the way? Epic holy priest, that’s been there done that and has the tshirt. Our pally healer? Another of our main priest healers, getting the hang of healing as a pally. My hunter? Alt to a priest that has played both sides of her talent tree to the fullest. And we all had the repair bills to prove it. NONE of us would ditch a group because we died 3 times.

We always remember the good group players, the ones that relax, and have fun, and can deal with deaths. But I know I remember the bad ones longer. There’s a special cell in my mental dungeon for them.
