I sometimes get a good shot…

Tonight was one of those times.

Summer finally decided to appear in Washington. Saturday and Sunday were gorgeous, and I finally decided to grab my gear and get my butt to the lake. I had hoped I’d get the eagle shot I’ve been wanting, but no luck.  If you recall over the winter I got the big white zoom lens. So, I put it to use!

First stop, the PX parking lot. Mt Rainier doesn’t show itself all that often, and finally after three years I got a good shot of it.

Not an eagle, but I think crows are pretty neat. My husband disagrees, but they have character!

And a Canada Goose, fussing at it’s feathers.

I forgot how relaxing it can be just to walk around with a camera. You tend to see things differently, like they’re in a frame. My oldest has picked up the bug too. I must admit that makes me pretty happy. I took her with me yesterday, along with her friend. Oh my goodness the craziness that comes with two teenage girls. I set her up with my smaller camera, the one I used until I got my DSLR. It’s an 8mp Canon powershot. And I installed Photoshop CS4 for her. Makes me glad I invested in it, since with two of us we’ll definitely get our money’s worth.

Hopefully Summer sticks around. When the Hubby gets home, I’m anxious to get out there again. This is our last summer here, and I’d like to revisit the shore, and the zoos, and get some good parting shots.

I Love Summer.

I got a lightbox along with all my other drawing supplies. I didn’t realize until afterwards that I’ve needed one of these for a while now. unfortunately I may need a brighter one, but for the moment this will do.

Why would I need one? Photography. I’ve done nature, wildlife, landscape, and outdoor macro. But rarely have I had any success with indoor macro. So I thought I’d experiment a little today.

And, my gamer friends will probably recognize the subject…

I got into photography in Alaska. I took hundreds, if not thousands of shots up there. The problem is, I let myself be my own worst critic, and rather than view them objectively, I wrote alot of them off.  Luckily I’m a packrat and I keep my files.

This week, I started a new Deviant Art account. Mainly because everything I do, I do as Lady Jess in some form or another. And I’ve really started to enjoy fan art and such, and my old account was, to me, restricted to photography.

Today, I started the process of going through my old photos from 2005 and on. And some of them were undeserving of my wrath. Some of them were totally deserving of course, but it seems I can see them more objectively now. I guess it’s a matter of time passed, as I’d get so excited imagining how the shot would look, then get home and find out it wasn’t exactly as I thought, and thus sucked.

Patience is a virtue. Here’s one I rescued this morning. And it didn’t even need any editing, just a crop.

Lesson learned I guess.

Totally kicks ass. I took this shot of my daughter’s corsage tonight, as she headed off to the JROTC ball tonight with her boyfriend. No flash, no editing except to make it un-huge. I am a happy happy photographer!

Canon  EFS (means it only wrks on specific DSLR’s) 17-55mm 1:2.8 IS (image stabilization) USM (really quiet motor) if you’re a curious canon owner.

I got great pics of her too, but…well she’d kill me if I post them here so I’ll be a good mom…hehe
