Get a Life?
Since the release of Wrath of the Lich King, the game is more active than it has been for months. There are announcements of server firsts, achievements to be had, leveling to do, new crafts to learn new areas to explore. And more things for people to snark about.
The one thats really ticking me off is the that guy has no life comment every time someone gets to 80 in this first week, or is already 80 and has T7 gear pieces, or pvp gear, or whatever.
OMG talk about no life!! or any of the myriad of things already said by non gamers about anyone that plays WoW, but now being said by people that are playing the same game, spending just as much time at it. Its really getting on my last nerve.
First of all, whats with the No life comment? Maybe these people DO have a busy life, and took some time OFF to get as much done as they can with the xpac release, before returning to that job/school, and returning to limited playtime. In fact I know a few military guys that have done exactly that. Time off ranging from a 4 day pass (gives a 4 day weekend) to taking some leave time(vacation). My hubby did not, but hes also fine with just getting there when he gets there. Maybe they do only have WoW to keep them sane, due to disability, there could be a variety of possibilities that well never know.
Second, I know for a fact I spend just as much time online as these players that have hit the level cap. Being a stay at home mom thats my luxury. No, Im not even close to 80, and probably wont be for a while. And Im not in any rush. Because end game isnt my main goal. However, for some End Game is the best part of the game and they want to reach it as fast as possible. Kudos to them!! I have never found leveling easy, so Im impressed when people get to top level as fast as some of them have, and frankly, I also dont care how they did it. Its their $15/month, they have the right to their playstyle. Whats the big deal?
I have 56 non combat pets, 375 skills (not counting fishing) spread across 3 70s and a 68. I have 56 non combat pets on my main, and I spent most of the week camping book spawns for an achievement, and fishing so I can get more. This could be evidence of no life too I guess.
Bottom line is, we ALL spend about the same time online doing what makes US happy, be it powering through to 80 and Naxx ASAP, collecting achievements, questing, grinding, instancing, exploring. We are all human beings behind these keyboards that really know nothing about each other. Why be so negative against those who have achieved their goals? Is it hurting you personally? Anymore than us playing our way is hurting them? No.
Gamers fight the No life/living in moms basement/geek stereotype every day, we shouldnt have to fight it amongst ourselves.

Well said! Yes there are those that want to burn through everything as fast as they can jsut to prove the point. Then there’s those of us that take our time, but still are pushing a little fast cos jsut seeing new shiny stuff rocks! And then there’s “It’ll be there when I get there but I’m having fun HERE NOW dammit!” Nothing wrong with any of them.

I don’t think “they have no life” when someone gets a server first or dings 80. I just wonder “why do it so fast?”. I don’t want to get to the burnout point again, and being at the end of the leveling curve so quickly (much less finishing all instances in the game) might do that to me.
Still, grats to those who put in the hard work to get to their goals!

Excellent post. You provide a perspective I did not have. As to the question posed by Delos, maybe they do it so fast because there’s a lot to do at 80 to get ready for raiding? Or to get leveling their main out of the way if they want to level alts while they wait for others to catch up?

@ Delos, I think it’s common to wonder about that which differs from our own ideals. That’s human nature.
@ Mama Druid thank you:)
@Rav thanks!! I’m in the having fun NOW category, I remember how boring 70 was…lol

This cropped up in our guild on Moon Guard a couple times. The fact that the achievements announce it to the world when it happens doesn’t help, but it still upsets me when people start to throw around the “no life, living in mommy’s basement” crap.
I’m an officer, so I took it upon myself to tell them not to talk rudely about people they don’t know. Without asking, we have no way of knowing if they took special time off to play a game we ALL love to play. On top of that, it’s not just time that get’s someone to 80 as illustrated by the hundreds of people on each server who have spent just as much time in the game and are at various stages of leveling. It takes some determination and planning to get to the level cap as quickly as some have.
And if that’s what they enjoy doing, and they have the ability to do it? More power to them. Thanks for the post and letting me know I’m not the only one who thinks this way.
